Mood and anxiety disorders

Most common types of mental illness in Canada1

Mood disorders (depressive disorders and bipolar disorders) and anxiety disorders affect the lives and functioning of people experiencing them, physically, mentally and socially.

Prevalence of certain mood and anxiety disorders have nearly doubled in the last decade2

  • The percentage of adults with generalized anxiety disorder increased from 2.6% to 5.2% between 2012 and 2022. There are similar increases for major depressive episodes (from 4.7% to 7.6%) and bipolar disorders (from 1.5% to 2.1%).2
  • Half of the people experiencing these mood and anxiety disorders have not talked to a healthcare professional about their mental health in the past 12 months.2
  • 60% of these individuals reported needing counselling or psychotherapy services, but only 44% have received them.2
